How to cancel a task

This guide shows you how to cancel an in-flight scan or audit task that is queued or running on a Site.

Use this when a task is stuck against an unreachable target, when you triggered something by mistake, or when you need to free queue capacity quickly so that other work can drain.

Prerequisites

  • You are signed in as a Site Administrator.
  • You can identify the specific row to cancel from the Active tasks grid.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Admin Center > Site Settings > Tasks and services > Active tasks.
  2. Locate the row you want to cancel — sort by Start date descending and look for the offending task.
  3. Select the row using its checkbox. The Cancel button in the toolbar becomes active.
  4. Click Cancel.

Verify

  • The row leaves the Active tasks grid.
  • The corresponding entry in the Scan log or Audit log shows a terminal status. The exact label may vary by deployment — Cancelled is the expected value.

Note: The exact UX of the cancel confirmation, and the precise log status label that results, may vary by deployment.

What cancel does and does not do

  • Cancel stops further work on the task. It does not roll back changes already made to inventory by partial work; whatever audit data was collected before cancel persists.
  • Cancel does not delete the schedule that produced the task (when Initiator = Schedule). The next scheduled execution still runs at the configured time.
  • Cancel does not back-fill or replace the task. If you need the work done, re-trigger it manually after fixing whatever caused the cancel.

Bulk cancel

To cancel multiple tasks at once, select multiple rows before clicking Cancel. Each selected task is cancelled independently.
