How to set up auto-tagging

This guide shows you how to have AlloyScan apply tags automatically — at discovery time on a Segment, or per Audit Agent for endpoints that report through the agent — so operators do not need to tag devices by hand.

Auto-tagging is helpful when a tag is structural rather than situational: every device discovered in 192.168.10.0/24 is floor-2, every device that reports through the lab-osx Audit Agent is lab-os, and so on.

Prerequisites

  • You are signed in as a Site Administrator.
  • The tag you want to apply already exists in the catalog (Admin Center > Site Settings > Customization > Tag management). If not, create it first via How to create a tag.

Auto-tag at discovery (per Segment)

  1. Navigate to Network > Segments.
  2. Open the Segment whose discovered devices should receive the tag.
  3. Find the Auto tag option in the Segment configuration.
  4. Pick the tag from the catalog.
  5. Save.

After the next scan that discovers a new device on this Segment, the device record carries the chosen tag.

Note: The exact placement of the Auto tag option on the Segment edit form may vary by deployment.

Auto-tag for agent-audited devices (per Audit Agent, site-level)

  1. Navigate to Admin Center > Site Settings > Settings > Audit agent settings.
  2. Find the Auto tag option for the Audit Agent setting.
  3. Pick the tag.
  4. Save.

After the next agent audit cycle, devices that report through the affected Audit Agents pick up the chosen tag.

What auto-tagging does NOT do

  • Auto-tagging applies on next discovery or next audit — it does not back-fill devices already in the inventory. To tag existing devices, either re-trigger an audit on them or apply the tag manually.
  • A device can carry many tags. Auto-tagging adds the configured tag without removing any other tags the device already has.
  • Auto-tagging does not undo manual tagging. Removing the auto-tag rule does not strip the tag from devices that already received it.

Verify

On the next scan or audit cycle, open a freshly discovered or freshly audited device and confirm the tag pill appears on its Audit tab.

The tag's Usage count in Admin Center > Site Settings > Customization > Tag management also increments.
