How to scan a segment

This guide shows you how to trigger an ad-hoc scan on a segment so that AlloyScan refreshes its list of discovered devices without waiting for the segment's schedule.

Prerequisites

  • Administrator role, or User role with permission to start scans.
  • A segment with an assigned Audit Service that is Active.
  • Required ports open between the Audit Service host and the target devices. See Required Ports Reference.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Network > Segments.
  2. Click the segment name to open its detail view.
  3. In the left rail of the Segment Open view, click Scan.
  4. AlloyScan queues a scan task. You can monitor it in Admin Center > Site Settings > Tasks and services > Active tasks while it runs.

If the Scan button is disabled, the segment has no Audit Service assigned, or the assigned service is Inactive or ScheduledForDeletion. Reassign or restore the Audit Service.

Verify

After the scan completes:

  • The Scan Results grid in the Segment Open view refreshes with discovered devices.
  • The Last scan timestamp updates.
  • The Last scan statistics panel shows Total discovered, Ignored, New nodes, and Known inventory counters.
  • A new row appears in Admin Center > Site Settings > Logs > Scan log with Initiator set to your account, Scope set to the segment name, and Status set to Finished. Non-zero Errors indicate partial failures — open the row for detail.
