How to design a custom report
This guide shows you how to author a custom report template in AlloyScan, either by starting from a new template or by editing the layout of an existing one in DESIGN mode.
Prerequisites
- You can sign in to AlloyScan as an Administrator. DESIGN mode is administrator-only.
- You know which inventory data the report needs to surface — for example, computers, software products, change events.
- If you are uploading an externally authored template, you have the template file ready locally.
Steps
Option A — Create a new custom report
- Navigate to Reports on the left rail.
- Click + New on the toolbar.
- Provide a Name and Description for the new report.
- Open the new report from the Reports list. The Report viewer opens.
- On the top-right of the viewer, switch the mode toggle from PREVIEW to DESIGN. The Stimulsoft layout editor opens inline.
- Edit the report layout — bands, data fields, headers, footers, and styling — using the designer's toolbox and properties panel.
- Save your changes from the designer.
- Switch back to PREVIEW to render the report against current inventory and confirm it produces the output you expect.
Option B — Upload an existing template
- Navigate to Reports on the left rail.
- Click Upload on the toolbar and select your template file.
- The uploaded template appears in the Reports list. Open it and switch to DESIGN mode if you want to adjust it before use, or stay in PREVIEW to run it as-is.
Option C — Start from a built-in template
Built-in templates cannot be modified directly. To base a custom report on one, upload or create a new template and replicate the desired layout, or use Upload to bring in a previously exported variant.
Verify
- The new report appears in the Reports list with the Name and Description you provided.
- Switching to PREVIEW renders content against current site inventory without a red error banner.
- Reopening the report later restores the layout you saved.
Important: Custom templates that surface a
errorbanner after the upgraded viewer is in use can sometimes be repaired by re-saving them in DESIGN mode. See Troubleshooting.
