How to purge change history (admin)
This guide shows you how to manually delete the stored change history for a Site.
Use this when you need to free space immediately, when you need to drop sensitive data ahead of an investigation, or when you have just turned Change tracking back on after a period of being off and want to start with a clean slate.
Warning: This action is destructive and irreversible. Once purged, the change history cannot be recovered. The current change-tracking configuration (toggle, retention, categories) is not affected — only the recorded history.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in as a Site Administrator.
- You have a clear scope in mind. Confirm with stakeholders before purging if change history is being relied on for compliance.
Steps
- Navigate to Admin Center > Site Settings > Settings > Change tracking.
- Click Purge change history.
- Confirm the action when prompted.
Verify
After the purge completes:
- Per-device Change history tabs show
No data to display. - The site-wide Change log is empty.
- Subsequent audits begin populating fresh change events from this point forward (assuming Change tracking is still enabled).
What is purged and what is not
| Affected | Not affected |
|---|---|
| Per-device Change history rows | Audit snapshots themselves (latest device state remains) |
| Site-wide Change log entries | Configuration of the Change tracking feature (toggle, retention, categories) |
| Notification subscriptions and templates | |
| Audit log rows | |
| Security log rows |
Auto-purge alternative
If your goal is just to bound how long change history is kept, set the Retention period combobox to a smaller value instead of purging. AlloyScan auto-deletes records older than the retention boundary on a rolling basis; you do not need to purge by hand.
