Managing user macros

Macros enable you to reuse commonly used blocks of text, such as standard greetings, e-mail signatures, disclaimers, etc., in multiple e-mail notifications or message boxes. Macros also allow you to use dynamic values when building workflow items and components.

Alloy Navigator uses two kinds of macros:

  • System macros are built-in macros. They do not appear in the Macros grid, but they are available in the Select Placeholder dialog when you insert dynamic content. For more information, see System macros.

  • User macros are the macros displayed in the Macros grid. Some are pre-defined, while others are created by administrators. User macros can contain reusable text, placeholders for object fields and other macros, or PowerShell and SQL scripts that retrieve or generate values.

In the Workflow and Business Logic > [Module] > [Object Class] > Macros section of Settings App, you can access all Alloy Navigator user macros configured for a particular object class.

TIP: If your configuration contains many macros, use the standard filter box to quickly find the macro you need. Press CTRL+F and then enter text in the filter box that appears above the macros grid. As you type, the grid displays only the macros containing that text. For details, see Searching for text in grids.

NOTE: To expand all macro groups, choose Expand All from the pop-up menu. To collapse them, choose Collapse All.

Depending on your needs, choose a macro type:

  • Text: Combines static text with placeholders for dynamic content, including object fields and other macros.

  • SQL Script: Contains Transact-SQL statements that query the database. When the script runs, the macro returns the value in the first column of the first row produced by the last SELECT statement.

  • IMPORTANT: For users of version 6:
Unlike version 6, modern versions do not support SQL Expression Macros and offer a new SQL Script type of macros instead. If your have migrated your database from version 6 and kept your existing workflow, your user macros of the SQL Expression Macro type have been converted to Text macros. However, they will still work fine in your SQL expressions for workflow Actions and Triggers.
