Managing Software Groups

In order to classify software products you assign them to software groups. There are four predefined groups: Primary, Secondary, Prohibited, and Ignored. You can use these groups as is, customize them as needed, or add new software groups. It is important to note that software group names do not imply any special logic regarding contained products.

Adding Software Groups

  1. In the Settings app, navigate to General > Software Catalog > Software Groups.
  2. Click New on the Module menu. The New Software Group dialog box opens.
  3. Type in a name for the group.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • If you have software products that have no effect on the software use and licensing policy in your company, select the Ignore during the discovery process option.

NOTE: If you ignore products during the discovery process, the information about their discovered installations will be deleted on the next data upload, without registering in the Change History.

    • If you have software products that have no effect on the licensing policy (for example, freeware products), but you still want to track this software, clear the Synchronize with Alloy Navigator check box. Software products of this group will be stored only in Alloy Discovery.
    • Otherwise, leave both the Discover software products option and the Synchronize with Alloy Navigator check box selected.

INFO: For details, see Discovering Network Nodes, Monitoring Software Compliance.

  5. Click OK.

Modifying Software Groups

  1. In the Settings app, navigate to General > Software Catalog > Software Groups.
  2. Select a group and click Edit. The Software Group dialog box opens.
  3. Make your changes as needed.
  4. Click OK when done.

NOTE: To change the display order of a group in the Desktop App, for example in the Software Product [Product Name] dialog box (for details, see Modifying Software Products, Classification of Software Products), select a group record and use the Move Up or Move Down buttons to change its position.

Deleting Software Groups

Alloy Discovery allows you to delete a software group only when the group does not have any products associated with it. In order to proceed, you can move existing software products to another group as follows:

  1. In the Settings app, navigate to General > Software Catalog > Software Groups.
  2. Select a group and click Delete. The Software Group dialog box opens.
  3. If there are any software products associated with the group, the Select Item dialog box appears.
  4. In the Software Group drop-down list, select another group where these products should be assigned to, and click OK.
