Exporting configuration settings

You can export either the entire Alloy Navigator configuration defined in the Settings App or only selected parts of it.

The largest portion of the configuration represents your business logic. This logic is built from many interrelated configuration entities that are organized by object class.

For example, the configuration for Incidents may include Actions, Triggers and other workflow items and components, as well as user-defined fields, shared views, user macros, etc. In other words, it includes all settings from the Workflow and Business Logic > Service Desk> Incidents section of the Settings App. Some configuration entities, such as actions and shared views, are also linked to security roles in your organization.

All configuration settings that together define the business logic for one object class are referred to as a complete workflow pack.

Exporting a complete workflow pack allows you to mark the export file as complete. A complete file contains every component required to fully implement the business processes for the selected object class, including classification tables, Actions, E-mail Notifications, and security roles. When such a file is imported, the system replaces all existing components for that object class with the components from the file and therefore replaces the current business logic.

If you do not want to replace existing configuration during import, you can create a regular output file instead. Regular output files can contain any subset of configuration settings, such as individual Actions, Triggers, dashboard widgets or user-defined fields. When you import settings from a regular .xml file, the system adds the new settings to your existing configuration and does not overwrite what is already defined.

To export configuration settings:

  1. Choose the configuration settings to export:

  2. The Configuration Export Wizard starts. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  3. If you are exporting a complete workflow pack, the Create a complete workflow pack page opens. Choose one of the following options:

    • Mark the output file as complete: Select this option if you plan to use the file to replace workflow settings in the current or another database.

The complete output file contains all configuration settings for the selected object classClosed (all settings specified in the Workflow and Business Logic > [Module] > [Object Class] section of the Settings App) , including related security roles for exported workflow actions and shared views.

NOTE: Complete files cannot be modified. You cannot append additional configuration settings to them.

    • Create a regular output file: Select this option if you do not intend to replace existing settings.

    Click Next.

  4. On the Specify the export file page, choose where to save the XML file:

    • To create a new file, specify its location and the file name, then click Next.

    • To export to an existing file, browse to the file and click Next. On the Export to and existing file page, choose whether to overwrite the file or append new data. Use the Show File Content button to review the current contents.

    • NOTE: If you have selected a complete file, you can only overwrite it because complete files cannot be modified.

  5. On the File Description page, optionally enter a description, then click Next.

  6. When Alloy Navigator informs that the export has completed successfully, click OK.
