Managing Software License policies

A Software License Policy is a property of a Software License record that defines how Alloy Navigator checks the compliance of this license.

Alloy Navigator provides a number of Closedstandard system policies.

  • Per Installation - This policy states that the respective software requires one license entitlement per every installation. The license remains compliant as long as the number of software installations does not exceed the number of allowed installations. This policy is applied by default to all newly created licenses.

  • Named Computer - This policy states that the respective software can be installed only on certain computers. You specify those computers during creation or modification of Software License record. The license remains compliant as long as the software product is installed on the specified computers and the number of software installations does not exceed the number of allowed installations.

  • Site License - This policy states that the respective software can be installed within a particular location and/or organization only. The license remains compliant as long as the product is installed for users from the specified location or organization and the number of software installations does not exceed the number of allowed installations.

  • No License Required - This policy states that no license is required for installations of the respective software. A license with this policy is always compliant regardless of any compliance rules specified. You may want to use this policy to temporary disable checking the license compliance.

  • Per User - This policy states that the respective software is licensed on a per user, not a per installation basis. This type of policy is frequently used for single user licenses, which typically can be installed on multiple computers. This license remains compliant no matter how many product installations are discovered.

IMPORTANT: Alloy Navigator relies on system policies, so they cannot be deleted.

Each policy has the Tracking attribute, which defines whether to track the usage of purchased licenses:

  • By Device — Specifies that Alloy Navigator tracks the number of devices (computers and hardware devices) to which the license is allocated and uses this number for calculating the license usage statistics and compliance status. The license usage statistics are displayed in the Summary section of the Software License details window.

  • By Device Owner — Specifies that Alloy Navigator tracks the number of owners of the devices (computers and hardware devices) to which the license is allocated and uses this number for calculating the license usage statistics and compliance status. The license usage statistics are displayed in the Summary section of the Software License details window.

  • By User — Specifies that Alloy Navigator tracks the number of users those to whom the license is allocated and uses this number for calculating the license usage statistics and compliance status. The license usage statistics are displayed in the Summary section of the Software License details window.

    • IMPORTANT: The licenses covered by "tracking by user" policy are excluded from the auto-allocation process and can be allocated to users only manually. You can not switch between "tracking by user" and "tracking by device" policies when the license is already allocated. To switch tracking policy you must first deallocate the license.

  • None — Specifies that Alloy Navigator does not calculate the license usage statistics. The compliance status for the license will depend only on the license expiration date and other restriction rules, if specified for the license.

To change the Tracking attribute of a Software License policy:

  1. Go to Workflow and Business Logic > Software Asset Management > Software Licenses > Classification > License Policy.

  2. Double-click the license policy to modify. The Software License Policy window opens.

  3. In the Tracking drop-down list, select a value:

    • If you want to track the license usage by computers and hardware devices, select By device.

    • If you do not want to track the license usage statistics, select None.

  4. Click OK.

You can change the Tracking attribute of system policies, if needed. In addition, you can rename license policies, tag them, and change their display order. You can also disable or enable policies and delete policies that are no longer needed.
