To facilitate the tracking of different software, Alloy Discovery allows you to classify software products to the predefined groups and categories (for details, see Defining software groups, Defining software categories). For example, you may configure a group that enables excluding certain products from the inventory or a group that enables tracking installations of unauthorized software.
You can also define different categories for organizing software products based on common function, type, or field of use. For example, you can create a category for classifying computer programs that perform user tasks (e.g. Application software), a category for classifying computer programs used to start and run computer systems and networks (e.g. System software), and a category for compilers and linkers (e.g. Computer programming tools).
When specified, you assign software products to the predefined groups and categories.
NOTE: For Alloy Discovery 6.0 users: Software Products with inactive software recognition rules are added to the Ignored group after the migration.
To assign one or more software products to a group:
Select the products from the Software Catalog, right-click the selection, and choose Reclassify > [Group] from the pop-up menu.
Alternatively, you can reclassify a product when modifying its properties using the Software Product [Product Name] window.
To assign a software product to a category:
Select a product from the Software Catalog and click Open. The Software Product [Product Name] window opens.
In the Category drop-down list, select the desired category.
