Supported audit clients

Audit clients (or audit nodes) are computers, network devices, and other resources that can be discovered and audited by AlloyScan. The minimal requirements for audit clients are listed below.

IMPORTANT: Unless explicitly stated otherwise, nodes can be audited using either method: agent-based or agentless (via the audit service). The agent-based method requires only Internet connectivity, whereas the agentless method requires specific ports to be open on target systems and network devices. For details, see Port requirements for agentless audit in local networks

Computers (by operating system)

Platform Version

Windows

Windows 10 or later

Windows Server 2016 or later

Linux

A wide variety of popular Linux distributions, including those based on Debian, Red Hat, and others, as well as independent ones like openSUSE.

Essential packages must be installed, including net-tools, inxi, and the libcap library (available across most Linux distributions, including openSUSE).

The agentless audit via the audit service requires the SSH server service running on each client computer.

Important (UUID for Linux identification):

To successfully audit Linux machines, the system must be able to collect the computer UUID.

Ensure that one of the following conditions is met:

  • File /sys/class/dmi/id/product_uuid is available on the system
  • Utility dmidecode is installed and accessible

If neither condition is met, the Linux audit will fail because the UUID cannot be collected.

macOS

macOS 10.7 Lion or later

Network devices

Only the agentless audit via the audit service is supported; the agent-based method is not available.

SNMP version

SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, SNMPv3

Virtualization platforms (hypervisors)

Platform Version

Microsoft Hyper-V

Windows Server 2016 or later

Hyper-V Server editions of the same generation are also supported.

VMware ESXi

Version 3.5 Update 5 and later.

For ESXi 6.5, WS-Management services must be enabled on each host.

Only the agentless audit via the audit service is supported; the agent-based method is not available.

Xen

Version 3.1 or later

The agentless audit via the audit service requires the SSH server service running on each host.

Citrix Hypervisor (formerly XenServer)

XenServer 5.6.1 SP2 or later

The agentless audit via the audit service requires the SSH server service running on each host.

Cloud resources

Preview

Only the agentless audit via the audit service is supported; the agent-based method is not available.

Platform

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Microsoft Azure

Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

Cloud resource discovery and auditing is in Preview. The functionality is still evolving and may change.
