Import

Use the Import tool to import data from external files and third-party database applications, such as CRM, HR, and network inventory systems, directly into your Alloy Navigator Express database.

You can use the Import tool to import data from these formats:

  • Microsoft Excel workbooks: XLS or XLSX files

  • Text files: TXT or CSV files

  • Other databases accessed through an ADO connection

Before starting the data import, determine the following:

  • The class of Alloy Navigator Express objects (Computers, Consumables, Persons, Tickets, etc.) into which your data will be imported. Besides objects, you can choose to import your data into lookup lists of a specific object class, such as Types of Computers or Statuses of Tickets.

  • The object fields into which your data will be imported.

  • The whereabouts of your source file.

  • Optional: Do you want to use a previously created configuration file? See the tip below.

TIP: When you need to import data from same data source several times or on a regular basis, you may want to create a configuration file that will contain all import configuration settings. Then you can use that file for all subsequent imports, including non-interactive imports via the command line interface. This allows you to schedule recurring data imports on regular basis. For details, see Command-line options for the Import tool.

You can start the Import tool from the Desktop App (Tools > Administrative > Import tool) or from the Alloy Control Panel.

INFO: For details on running the Import tool in non-interactive mode, from the command line, see Command-line options for the Import tool.
