Showing dependencies

This article explains how to view dependencies between objects and resolve references that prevent a record from being deleted.

A dependency exists when one object references another. For example, assigning a person as the owner of a configuration item (CI) creates a dependency because the CI references that person record.

Dependencies do not always prevent deletion. However, when you attempt to delete a record that cannot be deleted because it is referenced by other objects, Alloy Navigator Express displays an error message. Use Show Dependencies to identify those objects, then update or remove the references before trying again.

NOTE: Instead of deleting aCI, you can mark it as retired. For details, see .Marking IT assets as retired.

Viewing an object's dependencies

The Dependencies list shows all objects that reference the current object. Use it to identify records that must be updated before the object can be deleted.

To view an object’s dependencies:

1. In the data view, click and select Show Dependencies. The Dependencies list window is displayed.

2. Review the dependent objects in the Dependencies list window as described below.

3. To close the information window, click OK.

Working with the Dependencies list

The Dependencies list displays information such as:

• The dependent object’s ID

• Its class

• Its name

• The field that contains the reference

To open a record, click the corresponding object ID.

You can organize the list in the following ways:

• Drag a column header to the grouping area to group records by that column.

• Right-click a column header to access options for filtering, grouping, and sorting the list.

• Use the page controls at the bottom of the window to navigate through multiple pages.

• Select Open in New Tab from the right-click menu to open the selected dependency in a new browser tab.
