Adjusting computer matching rules

Introduced in 2023.2

When audit snapshots are uploaded to Network Inventory and then to Alloy Navigator Express, the system either updates existing computer records with the latest audit information or creates a new record if no match is found. The matching policy ensures data integrity and accuracy, preventing duplicates. While the default matching policy is typically sufficient, in the rare event of encountering duplicate computer records, you can fine-tune the matching rules under Network Inventory > Computer Matching Rules.

Computer matching policy

A matching policy consists of matching rules that assess how well each incoming computer record matches to existing computers, based on computer parameters. These parameter are computer name, serial number, and MAC address.

Each conflict resolution rule includes conditions that compare existing computer records with incoming computer information. When a positive match is identified, the incoming data overwrites the existing information. If no match is found, the subsequent matching rule is applied. If none of the rules are satisfied, a new computer record is created.

The default policy consists of the following rules:

  1. Both Computer Name and Serial Number match: If the Computer Name and Serial Number in an existing computer record equal the Computer Name and Serial Number in the incoming computer data, then detect a positive match and overwrite the existing computer record with the new data.

  2. Serial Number matches: If the Serial Number in an existing computer record equals the Serial Number in the incoming computer data, then detect a positive match and overwrite the existing computer record with the new data.

  3. Both MAC Address and Compute Name match: If the MAC Address and Computer Name in an existing computer record equal the MAC Address and Computer Name in the incoming computer data, then detect a positive match and overwrite the existing computer record with the new data.

Customize computer matching rules

You can fine-tune the default matching rules and create new rules, if needed.
