Network Inventory User's Guide

Reclassifying Unrecognized Nodes

After the Direct Network Scan, some Network Nodes remain unrecognized, and Network Inventory classifies those nodes as Unknown. For such rare cases, you can manually change their details.

To reclassify an unrecognized Network Node (computer, Chromebook, or network device), follow these steps:

  1. In the All Nodes grid, locate the Network Node you want to reclassify.
  2. Right-click the Network Node record and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. The Node Properties [Node Name] dialog box opens.

NOTE: After audit snapshot is uploaded to the database, you cannot change the identifying information for the Network Node. In this case, the Change button is disabled.

  3. In case a network node is not recognized and defined as Unknown, you can choose its type manually from the Network Node Type drop-down list.
  4. If a network device is not recognized among different types of network devices, it is defined as Other so you can specify its Network Device Type manually, such as printer, router, switch, UPS, etc. Then click OK.
  5. For unrecognized Chromebook, select Chromebook in the Network Node Type field and choose Chrome OS from the OS Type drop-down list.
  6. For unrecognized computer, select Computer in the Network Node Type field and choose its OS type (Windows, Linux, or Mac OS) from the OS Type drop-down list.
  7. For Computer running a hypervisor, specify the Hypervisor, such as Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware ESX, VMware ESXi, Xen, or Citrix XenServer. If you set the hypervisor as Undefined, Network Inventory will update this value next time you discover the Site or the Audit Source where that hypervisor belongs. The system will try to automatically detect whether the computer is running a hypervisor and if it is, detect its type.

NOTE: Network Inventory automatically sets the operating system (OS Type value) for the computer in accordance with the hypervisor type specified. This does not apply to computers defined as Not a Hypervisor or Undefined.

NOTE: For computers running VMware ESX/ESXi hypervisors, the Node Properties [Node Name] dialog box also displays the additional ESX/ESXi Options tab. To audit these computers, you must specify connection parameters. For details, see Specifying Connection Parameters for VMware ESX / ESXi Hypervisors.

  8. Click OK.

To reclassify multiple nodes, follow these steps:

  1. In the All Nodes grid, locate the nodes you want to reclassify.
  2. Select multiple nodes, right-click one of the selected items and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. The Properties of Multiple Nodes dialog box opens.

NOTE: When you select multiple nodes of different types (e.g. a switch, a printer, and UPS), the Network Node Type would display <miscellaneous>.

  3. In the Network Node Type section, click Change. The Reclassify Multiple Nodes dialog box opens.
  4. In the Network Node Type drop-down list, select the desired type and then choose one of the following options:
    • For Network Device, specify the Network Device Type, such as printer, router, switch, UPS, etc. Then click OK.
    • For Computer, click OK. In the Properties of Multiple Nodes dialog box, by clicking the Change button, you can change OS Type and Hypervisor, if needed. If you want Network Inventory to update these data, specify the types as Undefined and discover the Site or the Audit Source where that computer belongs.

NOTE: After audit snapshot is uploaded to the database, you cannot change the identifying information for the Network Node. In this case, the Change button is disabled.

  5. Click OK.

NOTE: Additionally, you can specify individual credentials for any node. For details, see Specifying Individual SNMP Credentials and Auditing Individual Network Nodes.
