Migrating data from a previous version of Alloy Navigator Express

Alloy Navigator Express enables you to migrate your data from a previous Alloy Navigator Express version.

TIP: If you upgrade your database within version 8.x, see Upgrading your Alloy Navigator Express 8 database to the latest version.

To migrate a database, run the Database Management tool, choose Create a new database on the Choose an action to perform page, and follow the on-screen instructions.

We highly recommend that you migrate your data using the Pilot System scenario.

Pilot System Scenario

The Pilot System scenario for Alloy Navigator Express includes three steps: Create Pilot Database, Update Pilot Data, and Move to Production.

1. Create Pilot Database

The first step imports all your data (i.e. the configuration information and data records) from the production database to a newAlloy Navigator Express 8 database. Then you use that new database as a pilot database for configuring and initial testing while still using your existing system in production.

2. Update Pilot Data

The second step is optional. During the process of configuring and testing you may want to update your pilot data with the latest data records from your production database. This will show how your fresh data looks in your new environment. You can repeat this step as many times as you need. Updating does not affect the configuration.

3. Move to Production

Once you have a fully configured and tested pilot database and are ready to begin the production use of version 8, take the final step. It will replace all data records (such as Tickets, Knowledge Base Articles, Computers, etc.) in the pilot database with your latest production data one last time.

The "Move to Production" step does not import any configuration information, only data records, so configuration changes made to your current production system after creating the pilot database will not be reflected.

When the migration finishes, the old database will be taken offline, renamed, then the new database will take the name of the original database.

NOTE: For version 7.2 or later: The final step also turns on the Automatic Upgrade feature, which helps distribute client components of the Alloy Navigator Express 8 among your technicians. For details, see Enabling Automatic Upgrade.

IMPORTANT: The Create Pilot Database step requires membership in the sysadmin fixed server role on the SQL server that will host the new database. Sysadmin credentials are required only for creating the database. Alloy Navigator Express will not use them later.
