Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express

Updated in 8.5

The Advanced Installation type provides the ability to install Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express (Runtime Only), which includes only the SQL Database Engine. You can use this installation option if you do not have a SQL backend for hosting the Alloy Navigator Express 8 database, or when a new SQL server instance needs to be installed on a separate computer.

INFO: For the list of supported database engines, see Database Engine Requirements.

To install Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express:

  1. Run the Alloy Navigator Express 8 Installer.

  2. By default, the installer extracts its installation files to the C:\AlloyNavigatorExpress87x.cd folder. If this folder does not exist, the installation wizard will create it.

NOTE: If you want to change the destination folder, click Browse and make a new temporary folder for installation files.

TIP: If you need to install Alloy Navigator Express 8 components on multiple computers, you can copy this folder to a network share and then run the AlloyInstaller.exe file from there. If no longer needed, this folder and its content can be manually removed after the upgrade has finished.

Click Extract. After the installation files are extracted, the Welcome page opens.

  3. On the Welcome page, click Advanced Installation.

  4. On the Advanced Installation page, select Install Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express.

The installation wizard will automatically analyze your machine and test for prerequisites. If any of the tests fail, for example, if your computer has insufficient RAM size or hard drive space, or Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 is missing, the wizard displays a warning message along with a hyperlink, which shows additional information about the encountered issue.

Information: Indicates missing software components that will be installed automatically.

Warning: Indicates missing software or partially met requirements that may result in the incorrect work or non-operability of the installed software.

Error: Indicates not met requirements that prevent the installation.

You can make necessary changes and then recheck prerequisites by clicking Recheck. To go back to the Advanced Installation page of the installation wizard, click the Close.

  5. Click Install to proceed with the installation after checking the prerequisites. The Choose Directory For Extracted Files window opens. Choose the directory, click Ok, and the installer will start extracting temporary files. After the extraction is finished, the SQL Server Installation Center runs.

  6. To install SQL Server 2017 Express, click New SQL server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation. The SQL Server 2017 Express setup wizard starts.

  7. On the License Terms page, review the license agreement and, if you agree, confirm the terms of the license agreement, and then click Next.

  8. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard and complete the installation. On each page, you can click Help to get additional information on the settings you are configuring.

  9. When the installation is complete, the Completed page opens.

Click Close to exit the Microsoft SQL Server 2017 setup wizard.

After you have successfully installed Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express, switch to the Alloy Navigator Express 8 Installer - Advanced Installation window and install Alloy Navigator Express 8. For further instruction on the installation, see Installing Alloy Navigator Express Server Components.
