The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of standards for planning and implementing IT Service Management best practices. The ITIL framework was first introduced by the British government in the late 1980’s, but global interest in this framework has recently escalated as more organizations find their business processes becoming increasingly dependent on their underlying IT technology assets.

Overseeing the ITIL is the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF International), a user forum for IT Service Management vendors and practitioners. The itSMF (https://www.itsmfi.org) offers local chapters around the world, special interest groups and publications, and sponsors annual conference events.
