Associating Devices with New Licenses

Sometimes, you have several Software License records for the same Tracked Software. For example, you acquired a Windows 7 license for 50 computers and allocated it to all computers where Windows 7 was installed. But a 50 computer license was not enough, so you acquired another license. In this situation, you need to replace an already allocated license with a new one. This can be done in two ways. On the one hand, you could open a license, manually deallocate it from particular computers, then open another license and allocate it to those same computers.

However, there is a faster and easier way of changing software licenses—using a specialized Associate Devices with another License command, which is available on the Allocation tab of the Software License record.

To associate devices with another license:

1. Go to Software Asset Management > Software Licenses.

2. Open an allocated license that you want to replace with another license.

3. Click the Allocation tab. You see the list of devices that the license is currently allocated to.

4. Select devices for which you want to replace the license and click Allocate > Associate Devices with another License. The Select License window opens.

5. In the Select License window, you see the list of licenses that have the same Tracked Software. Click a license you want to associate with the selected devices and then click OK.

   NOTE: When this Tracked Software does not have any other licenses, the Select Licenses list is empty.
