Creating hierarchy of Locations

Location records are organized in the hierarchical tree. You can build a hierarchy of Locations within a parent Location to reflect the actual structure. For example, units of the same organization can be located at different sites or in different parts of the country or even the world (a company can have a Marketing and Sales department with offices in different countries). By creating a hierarchy of Locations, you'll always have the details about each location and the type of offices there.

When you are viewing the tree of Locations, the Locations that have subordinate Locations are marked with the Expand icon on the left. Clicking this icon expands the node and shows the subordinate Locations. To view all ssubordinate Locations in the tree, right-click anywhere on the tree and select View > Expand All from the pop-up menu. To collapse the expanded Locations, right-click and select View > Collapse All.

You manage the hierarchy of Locations by using the workflow actions configured by your Alloy Navigator administrator.

Typically, the following workflow actions are available for creating Location records:

  • Location- creates a new Location record at the top level of the hierarchy.

  • Sub-Location- creates a subordinate Location record within the currently selected Location.

NOTE: To select the record in the grid - use the check box on the left.

To move Locations in the hierarchial tree, you can use the following actions that are typically available in the Relationships group:

  • Move To - moves the selected Locations together with their subordinate Locations in the tree and makes these Locations subordinate to the Location of your choice. To move multiple Locations at once, select these Locations in the tree (for details, see Selecting multiple records), choose Actions > Relationships > Move to on the Module menu, and specify the target Location in the action window. If the selected Locations were at different levels in the hierarchy, after the move they will be all at the same level inside the parent Location.

  • Move to Top Level - moves the selected Locations together with their subordinate Locations to the top level or the hierarchical tree. This action is available only for subordinate Locations. To move multiple Locations at once, select these Locations in the tree (for details, see Selecting multiple records) and choose Actions > Relationships > Move to Top Level on the Module menu. If the selected Locations were at different levels in the hierarchy, after the move they will all be at the top level.
