Configuring user-defined fields

In the the Settings App, you can create a number of user-defined fields (UDFs) allowing the user the manually enter and store custom data for each Network Node, for example, asset information, maintenance information, notes, etc. You can add UDFs for any object class: All Nodes, Computers, Chromebook, and Network Devices.

When you are viewing an object’s details in Alloy Discovery Desktop App, all UDFs are displayed on the Custom Data tab of the object details window. This tab appears if you have created at least one user-defined field for the object class. If you also want to see user-defined fields as columns in a list of object records (i.e. a data grid), those fields must be added to the current data view configuration.

Adding or deleting an UDF changes the database structure; therefore, it is recommended to add and delete UDFs when users are not logged on to the database.

To add a user-defined field:

  1. Under General > Fields, select the object class where you want to add a UDF.

  2. Click New > User Defined Field on the Module menu. The User Defined Field window opens.

  3. In the Field Name field, enter a physical name of the field. The name is prefixed with "UDF_".

NOTE: The name must be unique within the object. Alloy Discovery allows you to enter in this field English letters, numbers, and low line characters (_). Additionally, you cannot end the name with the _id sequence.

  1. Select the field type (for the details about possible UDF types, see Types of user-defined fields).

  2. In the Custom Label field, type the field label to be displayed in the interface.

  3. For a "Lookup" field: Under Lookup Values, create the list of values for the drop-down:

    1. Click Add and enter a value in the new line.

    2. Repeat the previous step to add as many values as needed.

    3. If you want to arrange the values on the list, use the Move Up and the Move Down buttons.

    4. If you want to rename a value, select the desired value in the list, click the Rename button and enter the desired name.

    5. If you want to delete a value, select the desired value in the list, and then click the Delete button.

  4. Click OK.

For any changes to take effect, you and other users must restart Alloy Discovery Desktop App.

To modify the definition of a user-defined field:

  1. Under General > Fields, navigate to the object class where you want to modify the UDF definition.

  2. All UDFs are displayed in their own User Defined Fields section. Click the section name to expand it and double-click the desired field.

  3. Modify the field label and other available parameters, as needed.

  4. Click OK.

For any changes to take effect, you and other users must restart Alloy Discovery Desktop App.

To delete a user-defined field:

  1. Under General > Fields, navigate to the object class where you want to delete the UDF.

  2. All UDFs are displayed in their own User Defined Fields section. Click the section name to expand it and double-click the desired field.
